Trailer for a Netflix drama inspired by Utada Hikaru’s classic hit song First Love

Utada Hikaru’s (宇多田ヒカル) classic hit song, First Love, was released almost 20 years ago, and now Netflix will stream a Japanese drama inspired by the song.

First Love is a story that follows a couple retracing their memories of their unforgettable first love over the course of more than 20 years and spanning three decades: The late '90s, the 2000s, and the present.

Utada Hikaru was considered a Japanese pop (J-pop) superstar in the late 90s and early 2000s – more than 20 years ago – with her debut album, First Love, breaking records in Japan. Although she is still active, she is not as well-known as she was at that period. In recent years she is probably known more for her song Beautiful World which was used as the theme song for the updated Evangelion anime films.

It is very artistic (for lack of a better word) to have one of Utada Hikaru’s most famous song from the era, a timeless classic, set to a story that is told over the same period of time. I still get feels when listening to the song.

First Love starts streaming on Netflix November 24th, 2022.
