Hackers are attacking Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 14 MMO

Square Enix announced that its MMO, Final Fantasy XIV, is under attack by a third party (hackers). Online service games can’t catch a break!

The company is strongly suggesting that people change their passwords for the game. How will that help when the hacking attempts are on-going? Well, the way they are being attacked is that the hackers are using email address and password pairs that may have been obtained from other hacks to try and see if any will work for the game. So if you’ve re-used your password on another site that had been hacked in the past, then there is a good chance they’ll get into your account. Using a unique password for each site or account will help protect your accounts from this type of attack.

Other good online security practices include activating 2FA (2 Factor Authorization) as well as avoiding easily guessable passwords such as those with common phrases. Though on a side note it has been proven that having a longer password, even with some common phrases, will be much more difficult to crack than shorter passwords with just unique combination of characters. Still, with the amount of computing power available today along with advances in AI, it has brought the difficulty level of cracking passwords significantly lower than before.
