Should you watch Star Wars Andor?

The new Star Wars series Andor recently started streaming on Disney+, starting off with 3 episodes on opening night. So, should you watch it?

Andor tells the story of Rebellion hero Cassian Andor. We first met him in the Star Wars movie Rogue One, which was about the team that stole the plans for the Death Star used in the original Star Wars movie. In this series, we see how Cassian Andor becomes the man who we meet in Rogue One.

The show starts out slow. As it moves forward though, you’ll slowly realize that this installment in the Star Wars universe has a more mature tinge to it than its predecessors. Although it officially has a TV-14 rating, I think this may be Disney’s first try at a more mature Star Wars entry. There are places where you can feel the series strain against the rating it has been given, although it seems higher than the usual. It wouldn’t be out of place if the series had been given a higher maturity rating.

As I mentioned earlier, the show starts out slow. Let’s just say that there is a reason Disney+ released 3 episodes the first night even though Disney typically likes to hold back episodes and release it on a weekly basis. We’ve touched on the reason behind the slower release schedule on this site before, but basically it’s because they don’t have enough content in the pipeline. So it is surprising that they released more episodes than usual for a typical Disney+ series. But I think the pacing is good for this type a show. It could be a tad faster, sure, but considering how this series is shaping up, the pace is close enough.

If you’re an avid fan – not necessarily die-hard fan, but definitely not a typical fan – this series might feel very different than what you’d expect. The story is not small-scale by any means, but it deals with the smaller stuff: friends, family and community interacting with each other in daily lives, work, transportation, basically the nuts and bolts of the universe as told through the interactions of the normal people. No Death Stars, no princesses, no emperors or rulers… just, people. And for me, that isn’t a bad thing.

So, should you watch Andor? I think it depends. If you’re down for an interesting, but slower series with a side of slightly more mature scenarios and less humor, this will be a good one. You won’t necessarily have to rush out to watch it as soon as it drops, but it will be a good series to watch whenever you get to it. Now, if you’re looking for that typical Star Wars experience like the movies, you’re going to be disappointed. It may still be a good watch, but only if you’re interested in watching your beloved franchise flesh out the universe in more detail. My advice to you guys would be to keep an open mind. For the regular fans though, it’ll be worth a watch.
