New volume of Hunter x Hunter manga coming out soon!

Shonen Jump, the publisher of the Hunter x Hunter manga, announced on Twitter that volume 37 of the long-delayed manga will come out in Japan on November 4th.

As you all know, Yoshihiro Togashi (冨樫義博), the writer and artist behind the Hunter x Hunter series, has been suffering from health issues – mostly back pain due to his work and lifestyle – and had put the series on hiatus multiple times over the years. To put that in perspective, the series is popular enough to get not one, but two, anime series, and in that time the anime has been fully remade with the newer series adding about 3 or so story arcs beyond the original’s ending (depending on how you add in the Greed Island arc). Basically, the manga has been in production long enough to have it be made into an anime twice, catching up to the story in the manga both times.

Almost as if to keep himself accountable, Togashi had recently created a Twitter account and has been posting updates regularly. In his most recent update, he states that he has 8 more (chapters) to go. He further lists some progress stats, such as No. 395… Complete, and that the cover color is complete.

The author and artist has also mentioned that he is willing to increase his staff and get more help, something that he had been adamant about avoiding, for some reason. He is also taking his health more seriously, mentioning that people should take better care of their backs.

I’m sure there are many fans that want him to get back (heh) to it, but we also have to balance that selfish, consumerist desire with the need to be understanding and supportive to the very human creators behind these works who put so much effort into producing the content we love. Burn out and overwork is real, people!
