Hacker leaks GTA 6 gameplay videos

Over the weekend, a user on GTAForums posted a cache of over 90 videos which he claimed were from the in-development Grand Theft Auto VI game from Rockstar. And the general consensus is that this is legit.

The hacker supposedly gain access to the internal Slack that Rockstar Games used for their team. What is lending credence to the claim is the fact that Rockstar is apparently running around ragged issuing DMCA takedown requests to pull down the leaked videos.

We have not downloaded any of the files or used any of it in our article, but I did stumble across one of the alleged videos while searching for more info and it looks legit. First off, the voice overs and other assets look like they would be too much work for someone to come up with for a simple hoax, especially someone not entirely familiar with game development, let alone 90 or so videos. Also, as someone familiar with parts of game development, some of the data displayed across the videos look like legitimate development terms and tools.

Based on what others have said of the footage, it seems to confirm that there will be a playable female character – the first in the GTA series, excluding the first game where the character was more generic – and the setting will be in a possibly fictional city in Florida. Grand Theft Auto Vice City, anyone?

Now it seems the hacker is holding the source code for both the unfinished GTA 6 as well as the source code for GTA 5 which the hacker is using as leverage to try and strike a deal with Rockstar Games. Whether this means that the hacker wants to get money or not be charged with leaking the files, that is unclear (but money would be the most sensible play here).

The overall response to the footage ranges from “We’ve been waiting 10 years for this” to excitement based on the progress of development as gauged by the alpha-level test videos. Personally, I'm keen on seeing more official stuff in the future.
