The Sims 4 is going free-to-play!

Now I’m not usually one for free-to-play (F2P) games because I like knowing my costs upfront, however The Sims 4 going free-to-play is awesome news.

Although it is the most recent entry in The Sims franchise, it is a game that has been around since 2014 (almost 8 years ago, as of writing). That’s a long time for a game! However, the game has been kept fresh through multiple paid DLCs and content packs, along with a healthy modding community. That said, the game can get really expensive to play with the amount of DLCs and their cost.

And now you’re wondering if everything is going free-to-play, then how will they make money? You might even be wondering if it is worth the investment – time or money – because maybe they’re sunsetting the game soon for an upcoming The Sims 5. Here’s the catch: only the base game is going free-to-play. You’ll still have to pay for those packs and DLCs. Oh, and there has been no release date announcement for The Sims 5, so we don’t know if the release is affecting this decision.

If you’ve purchase the base game already (like… me….), then you’ll get a free pack… or something. Basically it is a consolation prize. I’d have preferred an opportunity to pick an existing DLC and maybe also a pack for free. Oh well.

The Sims 4 will go F2P October 18th.
