Crunchyroll will bring Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island to English audiences

The Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island anime movie featuring the characters from the original Gundam movies will be available in select theaters in the UK, US, Canada and Australia end of this month courtesy of Crunchyroll. It wouldn’t be a stretch to assume that Crunchyroll will also show it on their anime streaming platform.

The film originally opened in Japan in June and is apparently a retelling of the 15th episode from the original Japanese series. However, that episode was excluded from English releases of the series, and the story was not part of the movies that are available on Netflix.

Here is a synopsis of the movie (source: ANN)

The story is set after the Federation defense of Jaburo, with the Federation planning to renew offensives on Zeon's invasion headquarters in Odessa. Amuro and the White Base head to Belfast to resupply, but the White Base receives new orders: to head to the "Island of No Return" to search and destroy any Zeon stragglers. Amuro sets out on the island in search of Zeon spies, but finds a group of children and a Zaku mobile suit on the supposedly uninhabited island. With the Gundam left behind, Amuro encounters a man who calls himself Cucuruz Doan. After uncovering the secret of the island, Amuro attempts to make his way back to the Gundam to escape.

From the trailer, it shows that CG was used extensively for the mecha, and unfortunately it really, really shows. It almost looked like a cut-scene from a video game instead of actual movie footage. But a chance to see the original characters that launched the Gundam franchise in a new (or sort of new) story will be a treat for fans.
